France arrests suspect in ‘terrorist’ attack on synagogue – POLITICO

The suspect attempted to resist arrest by opening fire at police officers. He was injured and had to be hospitalized, but his life was reportedly not in danger. Two other people were also arrested.

Surveillance cameras caught the main suspect setting fire to several doors of the synagogue and two cars parked nearby early Saturday morning. One of the cars contained a gas container, which exploded and injured a police officer.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the incident on Saturday afternoon as a “terrorist act” and said everything would be done to bring the perpetrator to justice.

Anti-terror investigators were tasked with the investigation and coordinated the operation that led to the Algerian's arrest.

Darmanin and French Prime Minister Garbiel Attal travelled to La Grand-Motte on Saturday, where they visited the synagogue and met with members of the Jewish community. “The anti-Semitic attack on a synagogue shocks, outrages and indignant all republicans in our country,” Attal said on X.

Since the militant group Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7 and the subsequent retaliatory attack on Gaza, attacks on Jewish institutions in France have increased.
