Jaguars release former Jets second-round pick as part of roster cuts

The Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receiver room saw a lot of changes this offseason. Although they lost Calvin Ridley as a free agent to the Tennessee Titans, they replaced him by signing Gabe Davis and using their first-round draft pick on Brian Thomas Jr. They also targeted a few players, like former New York Jets second-round pick Denzel Mims.

Mims joined the Jets but struggled to fit in with the team and requested a transfer in 2022. However, he was not traded until a year later and spent time with the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers before landing with the Jags. Unfortunately, his time with them has come to an end too, as the team released him on Sunday morning as they began trimming their roster down to 53 players.

“The Jaguars have released WR Denzel Mims, per source.”

Mims had a decent rookie season with the Jets in 2020, catching 23 passes for 357 yards in nine games, but he played sparingly over the next two seasons before being traded to the Lions. He never found a role for himself with them or the Steelers, and now he's been released by the Jaguars as he continues to struggle to find his footing in the NFL.

There's no doubt Mims has talent, but he can't put all the pieces together and stay on a team's roster. This is now the fourth team to pass on him in just his fifth year in the league, and it's fair to wonder if he's running out of chances to make it in this league.

Of course, you have to remember that Jacksonville is loaded with players on offense, so it was always going to be tough for Mims to stay on their roster. A team with a greater need at wide receiver could take a shot at Mims and possibly even put him on their practice squad while developing him behind the scenes, but it was pretty clear that the odds were against him from the start.

This is just the first of a multitude of roster moves Jacksonville will make over the next few days, and it will be interesting to see who ends up following Mims. He could be poached by another team, but this is a pretty big blow for Mims, and no one really knows what the future holds for him now that he's back on the free agent market.
