Novak Djokovic will undergo a scan for a head injury after being hit by a bottle at the Italian Open on the eve of the French Open.

The Serb was signing autographs after his match in Rome on Friday when a bottle fell from a fan's backpack onto the world number one's head.

Yesterday he suffered a surprising 6:2, 6:3 defeat against Chilean Alejandro Tabilo.

Djokovic: A bit worrying

“It was a very unfortunate situation for me,” Djokovic said. “It was an accident where the guy leaned over the fence and the bottle fell out of his backpack and landed right on my head.”

“It was unexpected, of course. I didn't even look up. Then I felt a very strong blow to my head. That really affected me. I went through half an hour, an hour of nausea, dizziness, blood and much more.

“I slept OK. I had a headache. The next day it was OK, so I thought it's OK. Maybe it's OK. Maybe it's not.

“I mean, I felt like a completely different player had stepped into my shoes on the court today. Just no rhythm, no tempo, no balance on any shot.

“It's a bit worrying. I haven't had any scans or tests. At the moment I feel like I should, so I'll do it and see. Let's see what happens.”

Djokovic hopes he will be healthy enough to travel to Paris to defend his French Open title, which he won last year against Casper Ruud.

I haven't had any scans or tests. Right now I feel like I should.

Novak Djokovic about his injury

The Serb has won three titles at Roland Garros and could return to the French capital this summer for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Tabilo will face Karen Khachanov in the round of 16.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Taylor Fritz beat Sebastian Korda in straight sets, while Aryna Sabalenka defeated Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 6-2.
