New Bedford man arrested for shooting at Wareham police

WAREHAM (WBSM) – A New Bedford man is in custody after allegedly firing a gun near children at a Wareham hotel, narrowly missing police officers.

According to Wareham Police Chief Walter Correia, officers responded to a report of possible gunfire in the cranberry bogs behind the Marriott Town Place Suites at 50 Rosebrook Way at around 8:03 p.m. on August 23.

Hotel management notified arriving officers of suspicious activity involving a guest entering the hotel after returning from the marshland. He was later identified as Scott Desimas of New Bedford.

Correia said that as officers attempted to make contact with Desimas in his room, three shots were fired from the room through the door. He said two of the shots “narrowly missed the officers and went through a wall behind which was a pool where two children and an adult were.”

Correia said another adult and a child sitting poolside saw debris fall into the pool, which was later determined to be siding material dislodged by bullets. The two bullets that went through the wall were in the pool and the third bullet was lodged in the hotel room doorframe.

No one was injured and Desimas left the room shortly after the shooting and was taken into custody without incident.

A search of the room revealed a rifle and a pistol. Correia said a woman and two small children were in the room at the time of the shooting and were safely escorted out of the room.

Desimas is being held on $250,000 bail and will be arraigned Monday in Wareham Fourth District Court on the following charges: four counts of assault with a firearm, one count of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, two counts of recklessly endangering a child, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and two counts of possession of a weapon with an FID card, repeat offense.

Correia said the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
