Mike White released by Miami Dolphins; Tua Tagovailoa replacement Skylar Thompson

play

The Miami Dolphins are releasing quarterback Mike White, league sources confirmed Sunday.

White was Tua Tagovailoa's replacement in 2023, but the Dolphins will move on with Skylar Thompson.

Thompson outperformed White in training camp and preseason and completed the sack with a solid performance Friday night in Tampa Bay.

Thompson has stronger arms, is more athletic and less expensive.

Perhaps the Dolphins will use the cost savings on White to sign an offensive lineman or defensive tackle for the interior defense, as league-wide cuts will be made between now and 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Thompson actually started a playoff game for Miami when Tagovailoa was injured. Thompson has improved in some areas since being drafted in the 7th round out of Kansas State in 2022.

Thompson, 27, has played in seven regular season games and started twice.

White is from Pembroke Pines and attended the University School in Davie.

White grew up a Dolphins fan, so this is certainly a disappointment.

But with a Sunday release, he can explore options more quickly.
