Floyd Mayweather appears to fire referee during fight against John Gotti III

What Floyd Mayweather says is true.

The legendary boxer returned to the ring on Saturday night for an exhibition fight against John Gotti III – the grandson of the notorious crime boss – at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City.

In the second round, Gotti complained about a punch from Mayweather and referee Hector Afu stopped the fight to penalize Mayweather for an illegal punch to the back of Gotti's head.

However, upon replay, it looked like it was a legal right hook.

Mayweather was outraged by the decision and even gave Afu a light shove with his right hand.

Mayweather then gestured for Afu to leave the ring and appeared to say “move” and “shut up” while yelling at him and the people outside the ring.

Eventually Afu left the ring and a new referee came in.

The fight then continued with the new referee.

The fight, a rematch of their disastrous first bout, was organized by Mayweather Promotions, owned by Mayweather.

Since it was an exhibition fight, there was no judge or official decision, but Mayweather largely got the upper hand over Gotti in a lackluster performance that drew boos from fans at the end.

Mayweather did not address the referee change in his post-fight interview.

At their first meeting in June 2023, Gotti was disqualified for excessive holding and trash talking.

Gotti then started a brawl in the ring.

There was no fight on Saturday night.

Mayweather, 47, fought his last professional fight in 2017 and ended his career with a perfect record of 50-0.

After the fight, Mayweather turned down a possible exhibition fight against 62-year-old Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., who was present as part of the DAZN broadcast team.

“He's one of the legends I look up to and he paved the way for me,” Mayweather said. “He's older now and if I do an exhibition match with him, it's not going to look good for me.”
