Albuquerque's downtown turns into a bloodbath, 3 dead in separate murders

Albuquerque Police Department detectives responded to a fatal shooting that occurred at 1:35 a.m. A male victim was shot and died at the scene.

While we were at the crime scene, we saw what looked like a possible body or pile of clothes in the corner surrounded by evidence.

6th St. and Copper Ave NW

Officers were initially notified at 2:05 a.m. of a stabbing in an alley in Area 6.th St. and Copper Ave. NW A victim was taken from the scene in a van. Officers later learned that a male victim showed up at an urgent care center on Albuquerque's West Side with stab wounds. At the emergency room, the victim was determined to be dead. APD detectives are investigating and collecting evidence at this location.

1123 4th St SW

APD officers responded at 2:20 a.m. to reports of a shooting in the 1100 block of 4th St. SW Police found a male victim who had been shot. A female victim was grazed by a bullet and transported to a local hospital. She is in stable condition. APD detectives are examining the scene for their investigation.

Recent increase in violence and deaths in ABQ

There have been nine homicides in the Albuquerque metropolitan area since Saturday, August 17, 2024. As we previously explained to our readers, the Office of the Medical Investigator classifies a death as a homicide when someone dies violently due to the intentional actions of another person. regardless of whether the person responsible is prosecuted. OMI classifications/modes of death include: natural, homicide, suicide, accidental, undetermined, and pending.

Yesterday, Saturday, August 24, a man was killed in southeast Albuquerque. The incident began when a man allegedly wanted to purchase an ATV and met a woman in the area to finalize a deal. The man took the ATV for a test drive but never returned. The woman, believing her vehicle was stolen, searched the area for it. When she found her vehicle, she and the man got into an argument and the prospective buyer was shot by the prospective seller. Investigators later learned the ATV apparently broke down in the middle of the road on Florida Street SE, which is why the man never returned. Police continue to investigate and we will provide updates as soon as charges are filed.

On August 20, 2024, a security guard shot a man at Circle K, 141 98th St. SW. The APD later announced that “after consultation with the District Attorney's Office, this case is being reviewed as a possible case of self-defense.”

On August 22, APD was called to the 500 block of Hermosa Dr. NE for a report of a man shot in the head. The man was reportedly taken to the hospital in serious condition. No update on his condition has been released since the shooting.

Last Sunday, August 18, APD officers were responding to a car crash in the Barelas neighborhood when they were stopped for a shooting near Gold Avenue and 5th Street SW. At the scene, officers found one person, 13-year-old Michael Tubb, fatally shot and another with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The injured victim was transported to a local hospital.

Albuquerque Police investigated three gunshot deaths that occurred on Sunday, August 18, in the 900 block of Alvarado Dr SE. Officers responded to a call about suspicious activity just before 1:00 p.m. and found multiple victims with gunshot wounds. It turned out to be a murder-suicide; two people were killed before one person took their own life.

On Saturday, August 17, at approximately 2:30 p.m., an armed burglary suspect fled the Family Dollar on Broadway. The individual reportedly drew his weapon, pointed it at an Albuquerque Police Department officer, and told authorities he was not going back to jail. Eventually, the suspect fled and hid in a shed in the 400 block of Arno. The suspect fired at least one shot while inside the shed, and an APD officer fired a shot at some point, striking the suspect. Eventually, the APD SWAT team was called and attempted to get the individual to surrender. Their attempts were unsuccessful, as at some point the suspect was shot after he refused to drop the weapon and made some type of movement, possibly with the firearm. The man was fatally shot and died at the scene from his injuries.

Additionally, on Sunday, August 18, two people were stabbed in Civic Plaza and one person was stabbed three times at the intersection of Central and Rhode Island. On Saturday, August 17, a person was reportedly stabbed near Wyoming. They were taken to UNMH and the report of this crime was not reported to APD until Sunday, the 18th.
