A 24-year-old Adelaide football player was taken to hospital in a serious condition following an incident at a Port Lincoln pub on Sunday.

West Adelaide SANFL player Sam May was injured in an incident at the Pier Hotel in Port Lincoln in the early hours of Sunday morning. His club said it was working through a “difficult situation” with his family.

The SANFL issued a statement on Monday saying it was providing “ongoing support” to West Adelaide after a family member said he had been transferred from Port Lincoln to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

“Our priority is the health and well-being of Sam and his family, as well as the entire WAFC community.

“The club asks that the family and everyone involved be given the space and privacy they need while we navigate this difficult situation.”

A statement released by a member of May's family thanked West Adelaide club doctor Megan Deakin for her assistance at the scene of the accident.

“Sammy is the light of our lives and we love and adore him to death, as does everyone who is lucky enough to know him. As awful and difficult as this is, we just have to wait and see.

“We are eternally grateful for your love, strength and prayers for our Sammy. We have always been incredibly proud of Sammy, of everything he has accomplished and what a great young man he is. He has always been a great inspiration to us.”

“We all know he has the heart of a lion and an incredibly brave spirit. He will do anything to get back to his best. Thank you and lots of love.”

May travelled to Port Lincoln for the annual Teakle Cup match between West Adelaide and Norwood at Centenary Oval, which Norwood won by 13 points.

It was the 25th SANFL game of his senior career.
