10-year-old boy killed in car crash in Plainville

An Oxford man accused of driving while drunk and causing a crash that killed a 10-year-old boy Saturday night is scheduled to be arraigned in Wrentham District Court on Monday morning, Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said.

Michael Escoles, 42, is charged with involuntary manslaughter, drunken driving, theft of a motor vehicle and other related charges, authorities said. Escoles allegedly stole a Jeep Cherokee belonging to a Vermont couple that was parked outside Gillette Stadium for the Kenny Chesney concert.

According to police, the Jeep struck a family of six in a Rhode Island-registered Nissan Altima as it stopped at a traffic light near an intersection of Route 1 and Route 495 around 8:30 p.m.

Escolas and the family were taken to local hospitals. A 10-year-old child in the Nissan did not survive, police said.

The first accident was followed by accidents involving three other cars at the intersection. None of the occupants of these other cars required medical transport.

According to Plainville Assistant Fire Chief Robert Skinner, seven ambulances were deployed to treat the injured. Morrissey thanked responders during the incident and expressed his condolences to the family.

“Managing this chaos and evacuating seven people to nearby hospitals required the help and involvement of many partner organizations,” he said. “I thank everyone who helped and offer my sincere condolences to the family who lost their son.”

Escolas remains in custody pending $25,000 bail, Morrissey said. The investigation is ongoing and officials did not immediately have any further information.
