European football: Bayern strike back in Wolfsburg and give Kompany a winning start | European club football

A late goal from Serge Gnabry secured Bayern Munich a hard-fought 3-2 Bundesliga victory at Wolfsburg and gave their new coach Vincent Kompany a winning start.

Wolfsburg started well but it was the visitors who had the better chances in the first half. They took the lead after good work down the right from Sacha Boey, who set up Jamal Musiala for an easy tap-in. Bayern started the second half poorly, however, missing a penalty when Tiago Tomas was brought down by Boey and Lovro Majer converted the penalty perfectly.

Wolfsburg caused the visitors' defence plenty of problems and in the 55th minute Patrick Wimmer passed the ball across to Majer, who slotted it home for his second goal. An own goal from winger Jakub Kaminski brought Bayern level before Gnabry slotted home a Harry Kane pass in the 82nd minute to secure all three points for Bayern.

Kane and new signing Michael Olise were lively and kept getting into promising positions, allowing Bayern to create a number of further chances, but Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara made some brilliant saves against the duo.

Thomas Müller, who equalled a club record with his 709th competitive match for FC Bayern, breathed new life into his team after being substituted in the 65th minute and made a decisive contribution to the victory.

“We are very happy and are happy to accept it. It's good for morale and self-confidence,” said Gnabry afterwards. “It was a very exhausting Sunday afternoon. The equalizer right after half-time knocked us down a bit. Then we were 2-1 down, which made it even harder. But in the end we rewarded ourselves and won.”

Endrick scored his first real Madrid goal as the La Liga champions secured their first win of the season, beating weak Real Valladolid 3-0 at the Bernabéu. The hosts struggled to break through Valladolid's ultra-defensive style until the 50th minute, when Federico Valverde slotted home a free-kick from the edge of the box.

Two substitutes provided the glitz and glamour in the closing stages. In the 88th minute, Brahim Díaz lobbed the ball over the Valladolid goalkeeper. Six minutes into stoppage time, Brazilian striker Endrick – who had come on for Kylian Mbappé in the 86th minute – hit the near post to open the scoring for Carlo Ancelotti's side.
