The Happy Valley actor's ITV drama is now trending on Netflix

“The Trouble with Maggie Cole,” the ITV drama starring Happy Valley’s Julie Hesmondhalgh, has received a new boost following its inclusion on Netflix.

The 2020 series follows the title character (Dawn French), described as a busybody, in the village of Thurlbury, where she comes to terms with her own traits while also confronting some of the other villagers.

After the series ended with its sixth and final episode in April 2020, it was recently added to the streaming service and has so far proven to be a hit with audiences: the drama comedy is currently ranked 10th on Netflix's trending charts.

In addition to Dawn and Julie, the series also stars Mark Heap, Vicki Pepperdine, Patrick Robinson, Phil Dunster and Gwyneth Keyworth. The script was written by Mark Brotherhood and filming took place in Devon and Cornwall.

“After drunkenly spilling secrets about six villagers on the local radio, smug Maggie is plagued by guilt over her senseless blather. But she seems to have found some truth in at least two or three of them, setting the stage for confrontation and reckoning,” the synopsis states.

Julie, who played Jill Wheadon in the series, is best known for her long-running role as Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street, which she left in 2014. Since then, the actress has had roles in the second seasons of Broadchurch and Happy Valley.

The third season of the BBC drama ended last year, but creator Sally Wainwright will soon unveil a new season, with Riot Women – formerly known as Hot Flush – set to premiere later this year.

The drama is about the five members of a punk band going through their menopause. Sally teases them: “They're angry and they're going to sing about being angry and being a certain age and all the things that come with being a certain age.”

The problem with Maggie Cole is streaming on Netflix.
