Pubs in Hyderabad pass drug test

Hyderabad: Investigators from the Prohibition and Excise Department (P&D) conducted checks in around 25 bars and pubs in Rangareddy on Saturday evening and tested nearly 75 people for drugs. None of them tested positive, said P&E department head VB Kamalasan Reddy.

According to Kamalasan Reddy, around 25 pubs, mainly in Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Gachibowli and Serilingampally, were checked this week, following similar checks last week. “So far, we have tested nearly 125 people and all of them tested negative for drugs,” he said.

Officers collected urine samples from randomly selected bar patrons and tested them for drugs. No checks were carried out based on tips, he said.

SY Qureshi, deputy director of P&E department, said that a special 12-panel drug detection kit has been used for the past two weeks. The kit can detect 12 drugs namely cocaine, amphetamine, meta-amphetamine, tetrahydrocannabinol (ganja), methadone, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), morphine, opioids, phencyclidine, barbiturate, benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle about the procedure of the test, Qureshi said, “A simple urine sample is taken. The machine runs all the drugs numbered 1, 2 and 3 and any number where no red line appears after the test is completed, then the test is positive for that particular drug.”

Speaking about the most commonly detected drug, Qureshi said: “Nobody tested positive in this check, but the most commonly detected drug was tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is basically ganja. It is detected in a wide range of people, from rich to poor, from young to old.”
