NEW YORK – Umpire Nick Mahrley was injured during Sunday's game at Yankee Stadium when he was hit in the head/neck area by the shaft of Giancarlo Stanton's broken bat.

After being cared for for several minutes, Mahrley, who was conscious, was placed on a stretcher and carried off the field at the end of the fifth inning.

“You never want to see that,” Yankees captain Aaron Judge said after hitting two home runs in the Yankees' 10-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. “When you see him down like that, you see the replay (and) what happened, it's never good.”

“It wasn't easy to watch him being taken away. But we certainly hope for the best.”

According to MLB.com, Mahrley suffered a concussion and will undergo further medical tests this week.

With one out, runners on first and second base, and the Yankees leading 4-3, Stanton hit a broken-bat single into shallow left field.

On impact, the shaft of Stanton's bat broke and flew back at Mahrley, who immediately fell to the ground.

The Yankees' athletic training staff tended to Mahrley, who remained on the ground near home base. Players from both teams eventually left the field and joined the crowd in applauding Mahrley as he was helped into the car.

Crew chief Marvin Hudson took over umpiring duties at first base, and the game continued with three umpires.

“That was bad,” said Stanton, who spoke briefly with Hudson before his next at-bat, when Hudson hit the third of two consecutive home runs after Juan Soto and Judge. “I think (Mahrley) will be OK.”

Stanton added that Mahrley “took it like a champion” and didn't make a sound when he was hit.

“We all hope for the best for Nick, he has a tough job back there,” Judge said. “It's not easy, both benches are yelling at you all game long about balls and strikes.”

“You try to do your best and keep the side of your head straight – it's hard.”
