Denver Broncos CB Damarri Mathis sent off in preseason game against Arizona Cardinals

As Denver Broncos take over the Arizona Cardinals In the last game of the preseason, a scary play occurred on the second snap. Damarri Mathis, a third-year cornerback for the Broncos, was injured on a run support play when he went in for a tackle and was mobbed by his teammates.

Mathis was carried off the pitch. Shortly afterwards we learned that it was an injury to his right ankle.

It's an unfortunate development for Mathis, who was competing with Riley Moss and Levi Wallace for the Broncos' No. 2 cornerback position opposite Patrick Surtain II. Moss appears to have the job secured, as the Broncos did not start him in Game 3.

Mathis was selected in the fourth round by Pittsburgh in 2022. After a promising rookie season, he began last season as a starter before losing his job and being relegated to the reserves.

We will update this article as soon as we learn more about Mathis' injury.

UPDATE: Head coach Sean Payton gave an encouraging update from the podium after the game, revealing that initial X-rays don't appear to show anything serious. However, Mathis will likely undergo an MRI test at the team facility on Monday.

“The images have been very positive, so I don't think it's anything really significant. That's good news,” Payton said.

As for Mathis' possible recovery timeline, Payton was, as always, coy.

“I don't have timing,” Payton said. “I wouldn't give it to you either.”
