Texas Tech makes changes to injury/availability policy ahead of 2024 season

Why Texas Tech will be a big success in 2024

Texas Tech announced Sunday that it will provide weekly injury reports to the public for the 2024 football season. In addition, the Red Raiders will update the status of affected players within 45 minutes of kickoff of their games.

This move follows that of several other teams this season, including the entire MAC Conference. The Big Ten has also implemented availability reports for all of its members in 2023.

“Each week during the regular season, Texas Tech's sports medicine staff will complete an availability report for that week's game notes,” the school said in a statement. “The availability report will classify student-athletes into three categories: out for the season, out for the upcoming competition, or questionable for the upcoming competition. …Texas Tech will list the type of injury based on the area where it occurred (e.g., knee, ankle, torso).”

However, this change comes with the caveat that these will be the only reports available to the media during the week. The statement went on to say that coaches are not required to disclose whether a player practiced that day for media exposure during the week.

“Other than this update each Monday, the Texas Tech coaching staff will not elaborate further on the nature of an injury,” the statement continued. “This includes the availability of student-athletes for practice that week. Again, the goal is to provide the media with this information prior to the regularly scheduled Monday press conference with the head coach. Joey McGuire and coordinators.”

Texas Tech enters its third season under McGuire after finishing 7-6 last year. The Red Raiders were picked to finish ninth in the Big 12 preseason media poll.

Tech returns as running back Tahj Brookswho ran for 1,538 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, and starting quarterback Behren Morton. Together, as Texas Tech's offensive leaders, they will try to disprove that prediction.

Now fans and media have access to injury reports for the coming year, and college sports are becoming more professional. Texas Tech will begin the 2024 season on August 31 against Abilene Christian.
