Suspect arrested in fatal shooting of Riley High School student

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The 19-year-old wanted for the murder of a 16-year-old Riley High School student in June has been arrested.

According to police, Derrick Myles turned himself in to South Bend police on Sunday afternoon, just three days after prosecutors publicly released his identity in hopes of finally finding him.

Myles is accused of shooting Alyyus Enoexpettiford on June 14.

That evening, police officers were called to a home in the 500 block of E. Victoria Street for a report of a shooting. When they arrived, witnesses led them to a backyard where they found Enoexpettiford with a gunshot wound to the head.

Enoexpettiford was taken to hospital where he later died.

According to court documents, Enoexpettiford was in the backyard with a group of people when Myles arrived on a bicycle and accused some of them of damaging his relative's house. They began arguing and then Myles allegedly got out a gun and fired once at Enoexpettiford before running away, abandoning the bicycle he was riding.

Charges were filed against Myles in July, but the warrant remained sealed because prosecutors at the time believed that making it public would hinder their efforts to arrest him. After exhausting all avenues to locate him, they unsealed the warrant and asked the public for help in a press conference on Thursday.

According to St. Joseph County Jail records, Myles is due in court Monday afternoon.
