An adult and a child were taken to the hospital after an accident in Heidelberg Township Sunday afternoon, officials said.

According to York County Emergency Operations records, firefighters were called to the scene in the 6900 block of Cannery Road in Heidelberg Township, just across the Penn Township border, at approximately 3:28 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

When they arrived, they found it was a single-vehicle crash involving a Subaru WRX. The vehicle had left Cannery Road and plunged about 150 feet down the railroad tracks, said Chris Walker, fire chief of the Porters Volunteer Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, all occupants had exited the vehicle, Walker said, but both occupants, an adult and a child, were taken to York Hospital.

“Her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening,” Walker said.

Despite the significant visible damage to the vehicle, Walker believed that the vehicle frame helped prevent further injuries in the accident.

“The passenger compartment of the car remained virtually intact,” Walker noted. “The car served its purpose.”

Walker said it appeared the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve on Cannery Road, left the road and rolled over the railroad tracks along the road several times.

Northern York County Regional Police are investigating the cause of the accident, Walker said.

The tracks were closed during the incident to conduct an inspection and clear debris from the tracks, Walker said.

CSX crews came to the scene to inspect the tracks after the vehicle rolled over them, Walker said. No damage was found to the tracks.

The Porters Volunteer Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Hanover Area Fire and Rescue and the Community Life Team EMS.
