Man found guilty in Van Etten kidnapping and theft case

Joseph M. Howell, 39, was found guilty in connection with a February 2023 kidnapping and theft in the Town of Van Etten. After a week-long trial, the Chemung County District Attorney's Office announced Friday, August 23, that Howell was found guilty of two counts of first-degree burglary, two counts of first-degree robbery and one count of second-degree kidnapping.

As a repeat offender, Howell faces a prison sentence of between eight and 25 years. Sentencing is scheduled for October 25, 2024.

Additionally, Howell faces charges in Tioga County of first- and second-degree murder, kidnapping and intimidation of a victim or witness in connection with another incident in May 2023.
