Major operation reported: 225 firefighters fight major fire in high-rise building in east London

A huge fire has engulfed a residential and commercial block in east London.

Forty fire engines and around 225 firefighters are responding to the fire in Freshwater Road in Dagenham; the London Fire Service has declared a major operation.

More than 100 people were evacuated from the building and two people were taken to hospital.

Shortly before the fire broke out, authorities were busy removing the facade cladding of the high-rise building.

Valcan, a leader in architectural cladding systems, posted on Facebook last week that it was working to remove “non-compliant cladding” on the building.

London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe said: “The London Fire Service is aware of a number of fire safety issues. The building was immediately fully evacuated and a major search and rescue operation is currently underway.”

The scaffolding around the building is on fire, as are parts of the ground floor up to the sixth floor and the roof, said the LFB, which was called to the fire at 2:44 a.m. on Monday.

As it turned out, the authorities were in the process of removing the facade cladding of the high-rise building shortly before a devastating fire broke out.

Valcan, a leader in architectural cladding systems, posted on Facebook last week that it was working to remove “non-compliant cladding” on the building.

In a photo posted by the company, the fifth and sixth floors are covered with scaffolding.

Cladding is an outer layer attached to the main structure of a building.

Since the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, activists have been calling for the removal of unsafe cladding from buildings.

In the event of a major incident, the LFB can increase its firefighting resources.

According to its website, the LFB sets up a command unit when a major disaster is reported.

An incident commander creates a plan to manage the incident based on several factors, including the number of firefighters and potential hazards and risks.
