Thurston Moore releases grippingly tragic new song “The Diver”

Thurston Moore has released his hauntingly tragic new single “The Diver” from his upcoming album.

The latest single features lyrics by Radieux Radio describing the life of a diver who eventually succumbs to the wildlife. Bassist Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) and percussionist Jem Doulton (Roisin Murphy) play on the song.

“The Diver” begins with a dreamy guitar and bass riff as Moore sings: “You found your watercolors and your fuel unused.” In a statement about the song, Moore said: “'The Diver' ends the album with the true story of a diver who got lost underwater in Lake Geneva while writing these songs.

“The diver explored the deep, exploring a world at the mercy of human mischief, only to be found days later, his life having succumbed to the wilderness. The song closes the album, a repeating piano figure like a call, a ringing, an alarm of melody.”

The song follows previously released songs “Isadora,” “Hypnogram,” “Rewilding,” and “Sans Limites,” which featured Stereolab’s Lætitia Sadier. All singles will be featured on the Sonic Youth co-founder’s album Flow Critical Lucidity, set for release on September 20 via Daydream Library Series. You can pre-order/save it here.

The tracklist for “Flow Critical Lucidity” by Thurston Moore is:

1. “New in town”
2. “Without Limits”
3. “Shadow”
4. “Hypnogram”
5. “We’re getting high”
6. “Rewilding”
7. “The Diver”
“Isadora (Bedazzled Mix)” – (bonus track included on a transparent flexi disc)

'Flow Critical Lucidity' is also Moore's first album since the release of his Sonic Life Memoirs. He had to cancel his tour dates due to “a long-term health problem.” In October last year, he announced that he had been suffering from atrial fibrillation for several years, but that he was now feeling better.
