How two tragic events hit Kasoa New Market

Two tragic incidents occurred at the Kasoa New Market over the weekend, leaving three people dead and goods worth millions of cedis destroyed on Saturday and Sunday.

In the first incident, a dormitory building under construction collapsed on Saturday, killing three people, including two vocational students and a carpenter.

Five other people suffered serious injuries and are being treated in hospital.

National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Joemens Kpormetey District Council Officer Christopher Appiah said in an interview that workers were carrying out concrete work on the second floor when the building suddenly collapsed.

Preliminary investigations had shown that the building contractor did not have the necessary building permit.

He said it also turned out that the building materials were of inferior quality.

In a related development, a fire outbreak on Sunday, August 25, destroyed more than 80 shops and sheds in Kasoa New Market.

The fire probably started from the explosion of a gas cylinder, which quickly spread to other areas.

A security guard, Mr. Joseph Amoah, reported that while on routine patrol, he heard a loud explosion followed by an inferno that destroyed the properties of traders selling various goods including groceries, foodstuffs and hardware.

Mr Appiah said it was suspected that the fire could have been caused by a persistent fire as the fire started in an area without electricity.

He called on traders and smokers not to cook or sleep in their shops and to stop smoking in the market.
