California man accused of beheading his parents says 'I love you' after police open fire; video emerges

A 41-year-old California man said “I love you” as he was shot five times by police after allegedly beheading his parents in a gruesome double murder. The identified suspect, Joseph Brandon Gerdvil, has been charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of his mother Antoinette, 79, and father Ronald, 77.

Gerdvil reportedly killed his parents in their home in a trailer park in San Juan Capistrano on July 9. He later sent graphic photos of the mutilated bodies to his cousin, who immediately alerted authorities, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said.

According to CBS News, police found the bodies of the elderly couple and their Chihuahua in the RV at the scene. One of the victims' heads was lying on a counter.

Gerdvil was later caught driving a golf cart on a bike path and throwing a shovel at a police vehicle. Officers eventually cornered him, and body camera footage shows him wearing blood-soaked clothing and holding a metal water meter. Despite repeated orders to drop the weapon, Gerdvil charged toward officers. One of the officers then fired five shots at him.

As officers approached to handcuff the wounded Gerdvil, he said, “I love you,” “I'm sorry you have to die,” and “Just finish me off… Please hit me in the head. I'm begging you.”

He later began singing while officers treated his wounds. Paramedics took him to a local hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition. He was charged with two counts of murder and remains hospitalized as of August 23.
