According to Atmore police, a Walnut Hill, Florida man was arrested on August 22 for drug possession.

Police spokesman Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a news release that 46-year-old Chad Smith was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

McMann said APD officers were called to the Fairfield Inn and Suites around 5:40 a.m. on the day of the arrest because there was a suspicious vehicle near the lobby entrance.

McMann added that the driver, Smith, stood there and honked for some time.

“When the officer arrived on scene, he observed Smith sleeping on the driver's side of the vehicle,” McMann said. “The officer attempted to wake Smith up several times. Smith eventually woke up and began speaking incoherently, stating that he thought he was in another state. The officer opened the door and detected a strong (odor) of marijuana in the vehicle. Smith was removed from the vehicle so the officer could conduct a search of the vehicle to establish probable cause.”

McMann added that when officers searched the vehicle they discovered approximately three grams of a mixture of fentanyl and methamphetamine, a small amount of marijuana and two syringes with residue of an unknown nature.

Smith was subsequently taken to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
