Man shot during fight in Grand Island; suspect in custody

GRAND ISLAND, Nebraska (KSNB) – Grand Island police are investigating after an argument between two men at a home near Grand Island Senior High escalated into a shooting.

Captain Dean Elliott said just before 5:30 a.m. Monday, a 45-year-old man drove himself to the Law Enforcement Center to report an assault with a firearm. The man had been shot in the trapeze after getting into a fight with 41-year-old Gerber Perez Vasquez at a home in the 2300 block of N. Kruse Ave.

The victim was taken to CHI Health St. Francis for treatment. Captain Elliott said the injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

The suspect was quickly identified. Perez Vasquez was arrested shortly before 10:30 a.m. after turning himself in.

He was arrested for aggravated first-degree assault, aggravated use of a weapon to commit a serious crime, and aggravated discharge of a firearm within city limits.

The victim, identified as Jose Arugeta-Hernandez, was pleaded guilty to third-degree assault.
