New Bedford murder suspect charged with armed carjacking

NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) – A New Bedford man charged with murder is now suspected of recently committing an armed carjacking.

New Bedford police said the incident occurred on August 14 at approximately 9:30 p.m. Patrol units were called to the Boa Vista Tower parking lot in response to an armed carjacking.

It is alleged that two victims were sitting in their vehicle when two masked men with guns approached them.

The suspects threatened the victims at gunpoint, ordered them to get out of the car, and told them to leave their personal belongings behind. The suspects then entered the vehicle and fled the scene on South Second Street.

Investigators have now identified one of those suspects as 21-year-old Anthony Jalo. Jalo is currently under arrest for murder. He is accused of killing Aaron Britto, who was shot during a robbery on August 4.

Police said while he was being taken into custody for that crime, there was evidence linking Jalo to the Aug. 14 incident. In addition to the murder charges, Jalo is now also charged with armed carjacking.

The identity of the second suspect is still being investigated.

Jalo remains in the custody of the Bristol County Sheriff's Office, where he is being held without bail.

“Given that this suspect shot a man ten days earlier, there is no doubt about Jalo's propensity for violence. We are very happy that the victims of this carjacking were not injured that night,” said Police Chief Paul Oliveira. “I am pleased that we were able to provide them with some comfort with the news that an arrest has been made. We will not let up until Jalo's partner in this crime is sitting in a cell next to him.”
