Dane County authorities investigate death of prison inmate

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Dane County authorities are investigating the death of a jail inmate Monday.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office reported that officers and jail medical personnel rushed to the jail's intake unit around 1 a.m. after a resident was found unconscious. Officers performed life-saving measures until paramedics could respond.

The agency said the resident could not be resuscitated.

The identity of the person was not released by the sheriff's office.

Sheriff Kalvin Barrett expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased.

“The safety and well-being of those in our care is our top priority,” Barrett said. “A death in our facility, regardless of the cause, is thoroughly investigated to meet the high expectations of this community.”

The Dane County Coroner's Office and the Dane County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death. The cause and manner of death have not been released.
