Mariah Carey says her mother and sister died on the same day in a 'tragic twist'

Mariah Carey lost both her mother and her sister on the same day in a “tragic twist”.

In a statement to People, the Grammy winner announced that her mother Patricia and her sister Alison died on the same day over the weekend.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life the same day,” Carey said. “I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away. I am grateful for everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

No further details were given about the cause of death of Carey's mother or sister.

Carey's turbulent relationship with her mother was extensively documented throughout her life – most recently in the singer's 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.” She even dedicated part of the book to her mother.

“And to Pat, my mother, who despite everything I think did the best she could,” she wrote. “I will always love you as much as I can.”

In the book, Carey addressed the subject of her mother again: “Our relationship is a thorny rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love binds my heart to my mother's.”

The book also reveals that Carey felt it was “emotionally and physically safer” to have no contact with her sister or brother Morgan.

Patricia Carey married Alfred Roy Carey and had Alison, Mariah and Morgan. The couple separated when the singer was only three years old. Her father died in 2002.
