Assistant principal in Texas recovering after serious eye injury during classroom incident; student barred from campus – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A Corsicana assistant principal whose eye was severely injured during a “disturbance” in a classroom earlier this month will speak publicly on Tuesday, while the student accused of causing the injury will not be allowed to return to campus.

Collins Intermediate School Assistant Principal Candra Rogers has been home since Monday of last week recovering from a serious injury that sent her to hospital by air ambulance on August 15.

“I rely heavily on my faith and am grateful for all the support I have received,” Rogers said in a statement Monday.

Although it is not yet known when Rogers will be able to return to work, she is expected to speak publicly with reporters on Tuesday morning.

The school district has not provided details about what happened when Rogers was injured, but confirmed last week that she was in a classroom with fewer than 10 students when she intervened in an unspecified situation and was injured.

The district said it could not release further details to the public because both the victim and the student have privacy rights and the investigation must continue.

“We will not shy away from being open to the public, but we will first follow the law,” said Corsicana Superintendent Stephanie Howell.

The student, whose name was not released, is expected to be charged as a minor. The Corsicana ISD said the Navarro County District Attorney's Office and the Juvenile Probation Department are involved in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the school district said on Monday: “The student has been confined to a specific location and is not allowed to be on campus.”

“Our focus remains on Ms. Rogers, her family and our students and staff at Collins,” Howell said in a statement. “This incident also impacts our entire district. We want our teachers and staff to feel safe at work, just as we want our students to feel safe at school.”
