A mother's nightmare comes true after fatal accident in Blythe

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A mother's grief and the search for answers 10 days later Her two young sons were killed in a fiery accident on Deans Bridge Road.

The accident occurred after a Blythe police officer attempted to stop the car the teens were in, leading to a chase.

Her car crashed head-on into a truck and caught fire.

Three people died, including 15-year-old Barry Fields and 13-year-old Casey Fields.

Now her mother has to face the harsh reality.

“I remember waking up one day and having four kids,” said Shakeila Hicks-Scott. “Now I wake up and have two.”

Now Hicks-Scott only has pictures and memories of two of her children.

“It means a lot to me”: One year later, the community celebrates the life of Khia Shields

The pain this family is going through is unimaginable. It is hard to imagine losing two children in one fell swoop.

She says her motherly intuition took over when she stopped hearing from two of her children. She went looking for them and found that her fears were becoming a reality.

“I feel dead inside, like my soul is gone. My soul is gone,” she said.

When she didn't hear from them, she went back the same way and came across the accident scene on Deans Bridge Road.

“I ran back down the highway on foot and started telling him, 'I'm looking for three guys, my car is this color, I haven't heard from them,'” Hicks-Scott said.

Because of the nature of the crime scene, there has not yet been an official identification from the Richmond County Coroner's Office. Scott says the police department told her based on their description that they were likely her children.

“My children and my boys have never been in a situation where I couldn't save them,” she said. “They have never been in a situation where I didn't know where they were.”

Hicks-Scott says she is waiting for answers to questions she already knows.

She holds her other two children even closer and cherishes the memories of Barry and Casey.

“Before my children left me, they told me, 'Mommy, I love you. I love you, Mommy.' That's all I can hold on to because those were the last words they said to me: that they love me,” Hicks-Scott said.

She hopes that no other parents have to endure the pain of losing multiple children.

“Love your children while they are here. Hug them every day because you never know when you will see your child for the last time,” she said.

Casey just turned 13 on August 11th and Barry was supposed to turn 16 last Saturday.

Instead of celebrating her children's birthdays, Hicks-Scott is now planning their funerals.
