Mariah Carey's mother and sister tragically die on the same day: “My heart is broken”

Mariah Carey announced that her mother Patricia and sister Alison both tragically passed away over the weekend.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend,” Mariah, 55, said in a statement shared with People on Monday. “Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also passed away on the same day.”

Although the Grammy winner did not disclose the cause of death, she was able to spend a lot of time with her 87-year-old mother before her death.

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” she added. “I am grateful for everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

It is unclear when she last saw Alison, who was 63 at the time of her death.

Patricia had Mariah, Alison and son Morgan with her ex-husband Alfred Roy Carey. The ex-partners married in 1960 and separated when the “Obsessed” singer was three years old.

Mariah inherited her singing talent from her mother, an opera singer and singing teacher trained at the Juilliard School.

However, the relationship between mother and daughter was very complex and Mariah once described it as “a thorny strand of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”

In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the legendary singer opened up about the couple’s relationship.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother was full of contradictions and competing realities. It was never just black and white – it was a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote.

Despite the ups and downs, the “Hero” singer dedicated part of the memoir to her mother.

“And to Pat, my mother, who despite everything I think did the best she could,” she wrote. “I will always love you as much as I can.”

Although Mariah and her mother were able to maintain a relationship, the singer admitted that she had no contact with her siblings at the time of the book's publication.

She explained that it was “emotionally and physically safer for [her] not to have any contact with Alison or Morgan.”

In the book, the “We Belong Together” singer wrote in detail about her turbulent childhood and described several alleged cases of abuse by her siblings.

In one chapter, Mariah claimed that her then 20-year-old sister drugged her with Valium at the age of 12, “offered [her] a small fingernail full of cocaine, added [her] with third degree burns and tried to sell me to a pimp.”

She also claimed that her siblings and mother treated her like “an ATM in a wig” after her rise to fame.

Alison and Morgan later sued Mariah for “intentional infliction of emotional distress” and defamation.

Alison also sued her mother in 2020 over child abuse allegations.
