Man accused of killing 10-year-old boy in Plainville crash pleads not guilty

WRENTHAM, Mass. (WLNE) – The Massachusetts man accused of causing a car crash in Plainville on Saturday that killed a 10-year-old was arraigned Monday and pleaded not guilty.

Michael Escolas, 42, of Oxford, faces 14 charges, including vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence, careless driving, failure to obey marked lanes, theft of a motor vehicle and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office.

Escolas was remanded in custody on $100,000 bail and subject to conditions including not driving a car.

According to Massachusetts State Police, Escolas was driving at a high rate of speed on Route 1 South in a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee that he allegedly stole from a parking lot near Gillette Stadium. He is then accused of rear-ending a Nissan Altima at a red light near the intersection of Route 1 and Interstate 495 around 8:40 p.m.
