Mariah Carey's mother and sister tragically die on the same day

Global star Mariah Carey is struggling with incredible grief after her mother and sister died on the same day this weekend.

The emancipation of Mimi Singer confirmed TMZ that her mother Patricia Carey and her sister Alison died within hours of each other.

“It breaks my heart to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life the same day,” she said in a statement to TMZShe did not specify what day they died.

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” Carey added.

“I am grateful for everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Carey did not disclose the cause of death of her family members.

Mariah Carey had “complicated” relationships with her mother and sister

Carey, 55, had a “complicated” relationship with her mother, according to NBC News. Carey also spoke at length about her mother, a former opera singer, with Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live” in 2020.

She told Cohen that one of the reasons she wrote her memoirs was The meaning of Mariah Careywas to “emancipate” herself from the difficulties of her upbringing by her mother. In the book, Carey said that the mother-daughter relationship was a “thorny rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”

Carey wrote that one day she accidentally burst out laughing when her mother sang a Michael Jackson song in an operatic tone. Patricia Carey immediately reproached her daughter for her carelessness.

“You should just hope that one day you can sing half as well as I can,” Carey wrote, reflecting on her mother’s words at the time.

“When you're successful in your career and the people you love are jealous of you, it's natural. But when it's your own mother and the jealousy comes to the surface at such a young age, it's especially painful.”

Carey's relationship with her sister Alison was even more complicated at times. TMZ reports that her sister has filed a lawsuit against Carey over the abuse allegations described in the book. Her brother Morgan Carey also filed a lawsuit over passages in the memoir.

Despite the often contentious relationship, Carey dedicated part of the book to her mother.
