Wrong-way driver accident in South San Jose claims two lives

A woman and a 14-year-old boy were killed in a wrong-way driving accident in San Jose on Monday, the California Highway Patrol said.

According to the CHP, calls about a wrong-way driver on Highway 85 first came in around 3:40 p.m. They were told the driver of a white Toyota Tacoma was driving the wrong way on northbound Highway 85 near Saratoga Avenue.

The accident occurred a few minutes later at 3:50 p.m. on Highway 85 northbound, south of Highway 87.

CHP said the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when it collided with a Tesla. A woman and a 14-year-old boy in the Tesla died.

Police identified the driver of the pickup truck as 39-year-old Duncan McQuarrie. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

It is not yet known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident, the CHP said.
