First court date for woman accused of murdering her mother postponed

According to court records, Danya Dewey's first court date, scheduled for Monday, August 26, has been postponed to Thursday, September 12.

Dewey is charged with the premeditated murder of her 63-year-old mother, Lori Pallinger, in the Broad River Community.

According to court documents, Buncombe County District Judge Julie Kepple informed the defense of indigents that Dewey “is financially unable to bear the necessary costs of legal representation and is therefore indigent and entitled to the services of an attorney as provided by law.”

The next step in the process is for Dewey to be assigned a public defender and make her initial court appearance.

Buncombe County officials were called to a home on Clarks Crossing Way in the Black Mountain/Broad River area on Thursday, August 22, where they found Pallinger dead. Dewey was found and taken into custody by Asheville police around 9 p.m. the same day.

Buncombe County court records show Dewey remains in the Buncombe County Jail and no bail has been posted.
