CPJ and human rights groups tell UN that press freedom in Nicaragua is virtually non-existent

Mexico City, August 27, 2024 – Nicaragua has intensified its persecution of critical voices since 2018, reducing freedom of expression to near non-existent, according to a joint statement to the United Nations by the Committee to Protect Journalists and eight other journalists' and human rights groups.

Prepared for Nicaragua's 2024 Universal Periodic Review, the report documents that the government uses various tactics to silence journalists, including media closures, property confiscations, and the suppression of independent reporting. The report shows how press freedom was systematically dismantled during the 2019-2023 review cycle.

The coalition's goal is to draw the attention of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva to these ongoing violations of freedom of expression and access to information. The findings of the statement are based on data collected and analyzed by the signatory groups and emphasize that these violations continue without consequences.
