Woman and child die in wrong-way driving accident in San José

A woman and a child were killed in a wrong-way driving accident on a San Jose highway on Monday.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident that left two people dead.

The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. on Highway 85 at Saratoga Avenue, authorities said.

A pickup truck traveling south collided with a Tesla. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, but the two occupants of the Tesla were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

CHP records show the victims in the Tesla were a 47-year-old woman driving and a 14-year-old boy in the passenger seat. They were both from San Jose. The names of the victims have not yet been released.

The driver of the Toyota pickup was identified as 39-year-old Duncan McQuarrie of Orlando, Florida. McQuarrie was not arrested, according to records.

The northbound lanes were closed Monday evening but reopened around 8 p.m.
