Dangerous drug called “coma in a bottle” seized at Atlanta airport

ATLANTA, Georgia (Atlanta News First) – Just days before the start of the predicted record-breaking Labor Day travel season, a dangerous drug was intercepted at Atlanta's airport.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said agents seized over five pounds of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on August 21. GBL has many street names such as liquid ecstasy and “coma in a bottle,” according to CBP.

According to CBP, two containers of liquid GBL were found in the luggage of a 26-year-old American returning from Spain to the United States.

According to officials, the drug is known to cause symptoms such as drowsiness, dizziness, memory loss and confusion, to name a few.

According to authorities, the substance is highly addictive and can lead to shortness of breath, coma and even death.

According to CBP, the individual was arrested and turned over to the Clayton County Police Department for criminal prosecution.
