Mariah Carey's mother Patrica and sister Alison tragically passed away on the same day this weekend.

Mariah Carey announced in a statement that her mother Patricia and her sister Alison both died on the same day.

The 55-year-old singer told PEOPLE magazine that she was “heartbroken” following the tragic losses of her family members.

Her mother Patricia was 87 years old and her sister Alison was 63 years old.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also lost her life that same day,” the statement said.

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” Mariah adds. “I am grateful for everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Further details, including the cause of death of her mother and sister, have not yet been released.

Mariah's relationship with her mother, who was an opera singer and singing teacher, was strained throughout her life.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother was full of contradictions and competing realities. It was never just black and white – it was a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote in her 2020 memoir.

“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment,” Mariah continued in the book. “A complicated love connects my heart to my mother's.”
