Mariah Carey admitted it was “safer” not to have contact with her brother and sister before Alison's tragic death

MARIAH Carey reflected on her complicated relationships with her siblings, years before the tragic death of her sister Alison Carey.

On Monday, Mariah, 55, announced that her mother Patricia Carey, 87, and Alison, 63, died on the same day in a “tragic turn of events” last weekend.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend,” the Grammy winner said in a statement to People. “Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also passed away on the same day.”

Mariah has already spoken about her childhood and the turbulence in her relationship with Alison and her brother Morgan Carey in her memoir “The Meaning of Mariah Carey”.

In the book, the pop sensation admitted that after years of conflict and trauma, it was “emotionally and physically safer for me to have no contact” with Alison or Morgan.

During an interview with Oprah Winfrey for her Apple TV+ series “The Oprah Conversation” in 2020, Mariah claimed that Morgan was “extremely violent” and Alison was “troubled” and “traumatized” during her childhood.

“I've tried to handle it with respect, although I don't think I've been given the same courtesy by anyone who was responsible for certain traumatic events in my life,” she told Oprah.

In her memoir, Mariah wrote: “When I was 12, my sister gave me Valium, offered me a pinky nail full of cocaine, gave me third-degree burns, and tried to sell me to a pimp.”

When asked what she thought was the reason for her siblings' pain, Mariah Oprah replied, “They always thought my life was easy.”

The singer explained: “They just grew up with the experience of living with a black father and a white mother as a family, and I lived with my mother most of the time, which they thought was easier, but in reality it wasn't.”

Both Alison and Morgan denied the allegations and filed separate lawsuits against Mariah following the book's publication.

Alison sued Mariah for $1.2 million in February 2021, seeking damages for the “immense emotional distress” and “totally unnecessary public humiliation” related to her estranged younger sister's abuse allegations.

Morgan said he had suffered “extreme mental anguish” and his reputation had been severely damaged. In his libel suit, he sought unspecified damages related to the publication of his memoirs.

Four years before Alison's death, Mariah described her “deeply wounded” older sister in the book as “the most brilliant and broken person I have ever known.”

A painful past

The Emotions singer wrote that Alison, who is eight years older, “saw things a child should never see,” adding that these painful childhood experiences “damaged and derailed her childhood.”

“She was fully aware when the family fell apart and our parents turned against each other; she absorbed all the pain of a family falling apart,” Mariah added.

Mariah Carey’s heartbreaking statement

On August 26, 2024, Mariah Carey announced to People that her mother Patricia and her sister Alison had died on the same day.

“It breaks my heart to lose my mother last weekend,” she began.

“Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away.”

“I am grateful for everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” she concluded.

Her parents, Patricia and Alfred Roy Carey, who died in 2002, divorced when Mariah was three years old.

Elsewhere in The Meaning of Mariah Carey, she remembers Alison as “extremely intelligent and curious” and writes, “I was told she brought home good grades, got into good schools, and also loved music.”

“I WILL MISS YOU VERY MUCH”

Alison's cause of death has not yet been determined, but Alison's close friend and caregiver Dave Baker told The US Sun that she had been in home hospice care for “the last three weeks of her life.”

He also revealed that Alison had “a problem with internal organs.”

In his tribute to her, Dave added: “Beneath her tough exterior, Alison was a highly intelligent, warm and sensitive person.

“I have known her for nine years and as her friend and, in her final months, her carer, I will miss her very much.”

“A complicated love”

Elsewhere in her memoir, Mariah explores how her relationship with her mother, opera singer Patricia, has changed over the years.

She described their bond as “a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”

“A complicated love connects my heart with that of my mother,” she added.

In the book, Mariah recalls nearly drowning on a beach trip at the age of seven, adding that she felt neglected by Patricia despite her “hysterical” cries for help.

Over the years, Mariah and Patricia reconciled. The latter made a special appearance on Mariah's ABC special “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas To You.”

The mother-daughter duo performed a soulful rendition of “O Come All Ye Faithful” in the 2010 program.

Mariah dedicated her memoirs to Patricia, among others, and wrote: “And Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I think actually did her best.”

“I will always love you as best I can.”

In her statement on the deaths of her mother and sister, Mariah said she felt “blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away.”
