10-year-old dies after man crashes stolen SUV into car in Plainville

PLAINVILLE, Massachusetts (WGGB/WSHM) — A 10-year-old boy died when a man allegedly drove a stolen SUV into a car in Plainville Saturday night.

Michael Escolas is said to have stolen the SUV in front of Gillette Stadium while its owners were attending a concert.

He then allegedly drove into the rear of the car while it was stopped at a traffic light.

The 10-year-old in the car was pronounced dead in hospital, and five of the child's family members were seriously injured.

Escolas is facing charges including manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol and car theft.

On Monday, Escolas pleaded not guilty to a total of 16 charges. If convicted, he faces a sentence of five to 20 years for manslaughter.

His case was adjourned for a probation hearing on September 19.
