Mariah Carey suffers two tragic deaths in the family on the same day

Mariah Carey is mourning the loss of her mother and sister, who she recently announced died on the same day. In a statement to CNN on Monday, she shared the sad news with the public.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life the same day,” she said. Carey's mother, Patricia Carey, was 87. Her sister, Alison, was 63. Carey did not release details about the cause of death and asked for privacy.

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” she said. “I am grateful for everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Mariah Carey recently announced the dates of her 2024 Christmas Time tour, which begins on November 6 in California and ends on December 17 in New York.

In Carey's 2020 memoir The meaning of Mariah Careyshe added details about her complicated relationship with her mother. Carey's parents separated when she was three, which undoubtedly caused tension in her life. She wrote, “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities.”

Despite their difficult relationship, Mariah Carey mentioned her mother in the book's dedication. “And to Pat, my mother, who despite everything, I think did the best she could. I will always love you as well as I can,” she wrote.

In addition, Carey is said to be estranged from her older sister Alison. In 2021, Alison filed a lawsuit for “intentional infliction of emotional distress” because Carey had mentioned some details in her memoir. The lawsuit claims that Carey used the book to “humiliate and embarrass” Alison by revealing details of her life and childhood. According to a report by CNN, Carey never filed a response to the lawsuit.
