Which infielder could the Mets call upon in September following Brett Baty's injury?

One of the Mets' first players from Triple-A is gone after third baseman Brett Baty broke his left index finger during a pitch on Thursday.

The Mets have set a four- to six-week timeframe for his return, which takes him out of the running for a return to the major leagues. He had a .229 batting average with four home runs in 50 major league games before being demoted to Triple-A in June. Since then, he has posted a .261/.358/.528 batting average with 16 home runs and 43 RBIs in 58 games.

With Baty no longer available, the Mets will be looking to strengthen their infield with additional players for more versatility.

President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has done a good job in his first year at the helm, providing the depth needed to ensure the Mets have other infield options besides Baty.

Mike Brosseau signed with the Mets in April after struggling with the Kansas City Royals in the spring. The 30-year-old has 241 games of MLB experience with the Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers, posting a batting average of .242/.313/.428 (.741 OPS) with 26 home runs and 77 RBI.

This season (81 games) in Triple-A, he had a batting average of .285 with an OPS of .849, 14 home runs and 36 RBI. He can play first, second or third base.

Pablo Reyes, 30, can also play second, third and outfield. He was acquired from the Mets on May 25 and has been one of Syracuse's most productive hitters since then. In 56 games, he has a .289 batting average with an .843 OPS, nine home runs, 34 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.

Luke Ritter, a 27-year-old right-hander, also has a good chance of making the MLB draft – the closest he's ever been to making the show after spending the last five years in the Mets' system. The first baseman, who also spent time at second and third base, leads Syracuse with 24 home runs and 82 RBI in 112 games this season. However, there is a concerning 36% strikeout rate that the organization will naturally take into account.

If the Mets are looking for more speed, Luisangel Acuna should make the team, although his slow start in Triple-A makes him an underdog — at least from outside the organization. The 22-year-old has an OPS of .658 in 478 at-bats, although he has 32 stolen bases in 115 games.
