Two people arrested on warrants in Sutter County shoulder-tapping operation

“California ABC agents encounter all kinds of law enforcement situations in their work to combat underage drinking and enforce ABC laws. They work undercover in bars and restaurants and conduct routine decoy and shoulder-slapping operations. All of this is done to keep our communities safe.”

SUTTER COUNTY – On August 19, 2024, California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) agents and Sutter County Sheriff’s Office officers cited two suspects for providing alcoholic beverages to minors during an operation in Live Oak and Yuba City.

The operation, in which a decoy under the age of 21 solicited customers entering a store to purchase alcohol for them, resulted in a $15,000 arrest warrant being issued against one of the people purchasing alcohol for the decoy.

One person who was approached by the decoy chose not to purchase alcohol for the decoy because they had a warrant for his arrest. This person was contacted by the police officers supervising the decoy and was cited and released on a $1,000 warrant and possession of a consumable amount of cocaine.

If adults agree to purchase alcohol for a minor, they can be arrested and charged with providing alcohol to a minor. The penalty for providing alcohol to a minor is a minimum fine of $1,000 and 24 hours of community service.

“We are taking these measures to prevent our youth from drinking alcohol,” said ABC Director Joseph McCullough. “By preventing underage drinking, we can improve the quality of life in our communities and reduce drunk driving.”

Statistics have shown that young people under the age of 21 are at a much higher risk of accidents than older drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 25 percent of fatal accidents are caused by underage drinking.
