Former Nebraska Boy Scout leader convicted of sex crimes against children

OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – A former Boy Scout leader in Nebraska accused of sex crimes against children was sentenced last Friday, court records show.

John Shores Jr., 54, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted sexual abuse of a minor. Six other charges were dropped.

According to court documents, Shores must serve 20 years in prison and be on probation for an additional 20 years after his release.

In August 2023, Shores used the social messaging platform Whisper to communicate with an undercover agent posing as a 13-year-old girl.

Shores asked the officer for nude photos and arranged a meeting. At the “meeting,” officers seized four phones from his vehicle. The phones led to evidence that Shores had actually spoken to a 13-year-old girl in July 2020.

Shores had previously been associated with the Boy Scouts, but representatives of the organization confirmed shortly after the first allegations came to light last August that he was no longer involved.
