A CenterPoint Energy crew works on power lines in Cypress, Texas following Hurricane Beryl.

The death toll from Hurricane Beryl now stands at 38 after two more deaths in Harris County were linked to the storm.

Of the 20 storm-related deaths in Harris County, eight were due to hyperthermia, seven were due to blunt force trauma – either from falls or from being stuck in falling debris – three were due to drowning or drowning complications and one was due to carbon monoxide poisoning from running a generator in a home, according to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The two most recent victims were 51-year-old Guillermo Felipe Richards, who died of carbon monoxide poisoning, and 63-year-old Rolando Arizmendez, who died of blunt trauma from a falling tree.

The total death toll in the Houston area is now 38, including nine from Fort Bend County, five from Galveston County, three from Montgomery County and one from Matagorda County.

Many of the deaths were not caused directly by the storm, but by the resulting infrastructure problems, especially the power outage. During Hurricane Beryl, more than 2.2 million inhabitants and businesses – about 80% of CenterPoint Energy customers – were without power. Hundreds of thousands were without power for more than a week.
