Charleston politicians discuss new plan to combat flooding

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Charleston city officials held a service Tuesday to unveil flood prevention strategies, focusing on a new water plan designed to address the city's rising water levels.

Mayor William Cogswell emphasized that the initiative is a community effort that brings together water experts and the local Charleston team to protect the city from flooding.

The water plan outlines strategies to address rising sea levels, storm surges and heavy rainfall. These strategies will help shape key policy decisions, including zoning and stormwater management manuals.

Cogswell also introduced the Basin Flood Action Program, which divides the city into different areas to immediately address specific flooding problems.

“We know a lot about where flooding occurs in Charleston, and I think it's critical to have a plan of attack immediately to address the flooding rather than waiting,” Cogswell said.

He also said the battery expansion project will protect Charleston for years to come.
