New charges filed in January 6 Trump case in response to immunity ruling

Special Counsel Jack Smith filed an additional indictment on Tuesday in the election interference case against former President Donald Trump.

Trump still faces three charges of conspiracy and one charge of obstruction of justice, but the charges have been narrowed.

This was in response to a Supreme Court ruling that said Trump was entitled to at least immunity from prosecution for all of his official acts, but that he was not immune for unofficial acts.

The government addressed the ruling in its court filing on Tuesday.

“The new indictment, presented to a new grand jury that had not previously heard evidence in this case, reflects the government's efforts to respect and implement the Supreme Court's rulings and instructions to remand the indictment. Trump against the United States144 S. Ct. 2312 (2024).”
