Mayo doctor's defense withdraws one of 12 motions challenging evidence in murder trial – ABC 6 News

(ABC 6 News) – The list of issues to be heard at the next murder hearing of a former Mayo Clinic doctor has been slightly shortened.

On June 6, Connor Bowman's defense filed 12 motions – detailed below – to suppress evidence in the first-degree murder case, as well as a motion to dismiss the first-degree murder charge against the former Mayo doctor.

Bowman is accused of intentionally poisoning and murdering his wife, pharmacist Betty Bowman, in August 2023.

A Minnesota state grand jury helped indict Bowman on first-degree murder charges in January.

Several motions alleged that officials violated Minnesota state health records privacy standards or that the court failed to protect patients' medical information during the investigation.

With regard to search warrants, it is also argued that law enforcement search warrants were too broad and did not refer to any specific crime that officers were investigating.

The Olmsted County District Attorney's Office had requested extensive clarifications on the motions two weeks ago, claiming that they did not explain in detail what evidence they wanted to suppress and that the necessary information on whether and which instructions to the grand jury were incorrect was also missing.

Following the state's response, Bowman's defense withdrew Motion 4 – a motion to suppress evidence from various electronic devices seized from the Bowmans' residence.

The rest will be heard in Connor Bowman's omnibus hearing, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on September 4.

Bowman’s defense’s original motions are summarized below:

Motion 1: Motion to suppress (remove from use in trial) all evidence found during a search of the Bowmans' Sandy Beach Lane residence and associated vehicles in an attempt to locate toxic or poisonous substances.

Movement 2: Motion to suppress all evidence found during a search of Mayo Clinic, including access logs to Bowman's medical records, his Internet usage, and his internal investigation notes.

Motion 3: Motion to suppress all evidence provided by the University of Kansas relating to Connor Bowman's work as a poison specialist, including web browsing history, emails, requests made to Bowman, and records from Bowman's university-issued electronic devices.

Movement 4: Motion to suppress evidence from various electronic devices seized from the Bowmans' residence, including (but not limited to): Connor Bowman's work laptops from the University of Kansas, Betty Bowman's iPhone and MacBook, several other laptops and iPhones, a smartwatch, and several jump and hard drives.
