Death of 10-year-old boy shot in the neck in Lauderhill ruled accidental – NBC 6 South Florida

Prosecutors have ruled the death of a 10-year-old boy who was shot in the neck in his Lauderhill home an accident.

A closing memo from the Broward District Attorney's Office said that after a thorough review of the investigation, they concluded that Mike Brenly Saint Jean's death was an accident and no one would be charged in his death.

Saint Jean was sitting in his living room on November 14, 2023, when a stray bullet entered the wall and into his neck and exited. He died days later.

The bullet came from a neighboring apartment on Northwest 19th Street near 54th Avenue, Lauderhill police said.

In the prosecutor's closing memo, a woman told investigators she moved her boyfriend's gun and “accidentally picked it up while her finger was in the trigger guard, causing the gun to accidentally fire.”

“It is clear from the evidence collected that it was not an intentional and criminal act that caused the death of Mike Saint Jean,” the memo said.

The memo also stated that although the man who left the gun in the neighbor's house was not allowed to own a gun, he was still charged for possessing it; however, leaving the gun safely in a bag at his girlfriend's house was not considered a negligent act.
