More than 30 people arrested in connection with gang activity and drug trafficking in Uvalde

SAN ANTONIO – Authorities have arrested more than thirty people in connection with drug trafficking

On Tuesday, Department of Homeland Security investigators, along with Uvalde County officials and Uvalde Police, arrested 33 people in connection with violent drug and gang activity.

Uvalde County Sheriff Ruben Nolasco posted a statement on Facebook announcing that authorities had arrested suspected members of several violent gangs after 68 federal indictments for drug trafficking and gang activity and 17 organized crime charges as part of “Operation U-Town.”

These charges are the result of a two-year investigation into gang activity and drug trafficking in the Uvalde area.

“Gang violence has no place here in Texas, and we will punish the heinous criminals to the fullest extent of the law,” said Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who ordered authorities to begin their investigation in September 2022.

The Texas Department of Public Safety established a Criminal Investigations Unit in Uvalde in September 2022 to conduct investigations and patrols as part of the anti-gang effort.

District Attorney Christina Mitchell said in a statement that she expects more charges and arrests as the investigation into gang activity continues.

“We will not tolerate this criminal activity in our community,” Mitchell said. “We will hunt down anyone who participates, assists or allows this cancer to happen in our city.”

Investigations into gang activity in the area are ongoing.
